States to Obama: Don't Tread On Me!

At least 20 states are considering resolutions under the 10th amendment to prevent Washington from thwarting state sovereign rights guaranteed under the Constitution. Much of the funds given to states under the $789B Stimulus Plan include provisions that demand that states change their laws to reflect federal mandates. One such law requires that states offer unemployment compensation to part-time workers, which in effect, would INCREASE some states' debt, even as they collect money from the Stimulus Plan. In addition, these laws would remain on the books long after the Stimulus money has been spent.

Barack Obama and the Democrats in Congress are determined to force their socialist agenda upon all Americans in a stealthy and insidious manner. By increasing rules, regulations, and mandates, they can effect change at every level of government without the populace being any the wiser until it is too late. This time, the states are standing up for themselves and telling Obama, "Back Off!"

"WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Republican lawmakers from more than 20 states across the country are willing to take federal funding, but only on their terms.

Some state lawmakers are pushing for sovereignty from the federal government.

From Montana to South Carolina, lawmakers in mostly red states have pushed ahead with measures calling for state sovereignty under the Tenth Amendment, saying the federal government has overstepped its bounds with the stimulus package. The states are calling for the right to ignore laws they deem unconstitutional." Read more...

Let me get this straight. Some states are going to give up unemployment compensation for their contingents. but it is ok for Bernie Madoff and Sir Allen Standford to walk off with a few billion. I believe there is some plantation thinking going on in those State Houses.

Harold, Forgive my confusion for not understanding your point, but what is the connection between states being forced to change their unemployment compensation laws by the federal government and Bernie Madoff?

I'm all for states rights and I belive the federal government has overstepped its bounds in many places--education, foreign aid, social security, and welfare to name a few. It's long past time for states to demand the Feds to back off. But as long as states (or businesses, schools, individuals) are accepting Federal money don't they also have to accept federal control? I'd like to see them refuse the money and the controls. It's time the balance between the federal and state governments swung back in the direction of the states. The balance is there for a reason--to keep any one person or party from becoming too powerful.

Harold has me confused too.

I'm sorry Harold but I don't get the relationships that you're trying to make here...please explain.
This trick by the deceitful Obama administration is exactly what Bobby Jindal et al were saying about refusing to accept these funds....it forces the state into further funding mandates....just exactly what this country doesn't need.
Folks, let's continue to pay attention to these ploys and be sure to email your legislators on this disgraceful omnibus bill.

O.K., MadMom; (I posted this on USWeapon's blog, also)

I sort of copied the following quote from Michelle Malkins blog, So here is your starting point!

“For new readers who are just learning about the protest movement and want to join, the best organizational resources are Tax Day Tea Party (nationwide April 15 events), Twitter #teaparty, PJTV’s list of upcoming protests, Re-TeaParty (send teabags to Washington and find July 4 events), and TCOT Report. And one more good one: New American Tea Party.”

This nation’s forefathers started with the Boston Tea Party, but our nation has grown much larger since then. We need to get organized NATIONALLY! And I do mean NATIONALLY! Unless we get an overwhelming number of people to get out, get vocal, wave signs and be seen then the MSNM (Main Stream News Media) won’t pay a lick of attention. Get my drift? If we do not get the MSNM attention, then we get absolutely NOTHING!

I live in one of the Western States, and I hear that Las Vegas is one of the hardest hit cities as far as home foreclosures. Guess where Harry Reid is from? I have a Nephew who is a flaming liberal that lives and works in the Chicago area, Obummer’s state. I have friends and relatives in California, Texas, Oklahoma, Virginia, Florida and North Carolina, not to mention New Jersey, Tennessee, Oregon and Washington State(where I was hatched and grew up). I have been burning up the internet email system and alienating (again) most of my relatives trying to get them all to pay attention to what is going on behind their backs.

THAT’s what we need to do! Get as many people as we can on board for the April 15 Tax Tea Party. I am trying my best. How many others out there are?

As we used to say in my USMC days . . . “Get off your lazy asses, people, get a move on and lets get this war in motion!”

OK, Rock On GA Rowe! I am organizing the Rhode Island Tax Day Tea Party and am well plugged into all the info you cited. I am not a Marine, but a salesperson from day one who takes crap from no one and considers "NO" a starting point. I, too, live in the bluest of blue regions (New England) and am confronted daily by people (and friends) who view me as the girl from the exorcist with the head spinning and green stuff spewing. No matter. I just move on. So anyway, I'm with you. Let's get the rest of the restless yackers off of the couch and get something going here!

Just adding my two cents worth....

Harold, please reread this article and look further into some of the rules that come along with the money. It may seem OK for the short term because so many people need help, but these programs then become the norm and when this stimulus money runs out, the states must take it over. I give enormous credit to the Governors of the states that are actually looking at the terms instead of grabbing the money and dealing with the consequences later.

Tea Party - I'm signed up and going to the Wisconsin Party!
